Interview & Career Tips only for Spa positions

Spas are becoming a growing business in Hospitality industry. If you aim at becoming a successful part of it, you are in the right place! Interview and career tips for different levels of Spa positions are following.

First of all, in order to become a Spa Therapist you need a unique combination of skills and continuous training. You will have to be an excellent communicator with people from every age group, social background, ethnic origin, occupation and gender. More specifically, you need to have a high degree of physical stamina and be highly dexterous. Your personality should be vibrant, strong and interesting and your character should be diplomatic and sympathetic. To find all these qualities in a single individual is very difficult. That is why good spa therapists are rare! The pay, while training may be low, but it is often enhanced with tips and gratuities from clients and will be increased further by commission earned through selling retail products to clients. Spa therapists in top spas and those who progress to supervisory or management positions will earn even more.

Secondly, what about Spa Receptionists? Most probably, this specific type of receptionist will be asked in an interview:

Do you think that spas need receptionists?

In this case, you may answer that a receptionist is essential to portray a positive image of the facility before a client tastes the services and to provide administrative and clerical support. What have been your main duties while working as a spa receptionist in the past? Here, an appropriate answer could be ‘As a spa receptionist, I have operated the front desk and provided information to walk-in customers, handled telephone calls, scheduled appointments, and upsold the spa’s retail products’.

What skills do you believe a spa receptionist needs to possess to be successful at this position?

Here you should talk about the pleasant attitude, the excellent customer service awareness, the ability to handle multiple tasks at the same time and cashiering services that a spa receptionist should possess. Many times, a spa receptionist is asked to double as a therapist or an assistant, so it is also essential to know at least some of the services that spas offer.

How do you handle irate clients?

Be diplomatic showcasing your calmness and inner peace: ‘I keep my temper in check and never respond harshly. Even if the client is unreasonable or abusive, I maintain my peace and involve a manager if I cannot calm him or her down’.

When you finally climb to a Spa Director position, you will oversee staffing, training, product purchasing, merchandising, setting up a strong retail outlet, budgeting and forecasting. You may be asked to help market the spa and be knowledgeable about Internet advertising and have Public Relations’ contacts. Spa Directors are often asked to help design new or additional spa areas and see the project through to opening. So, when levelling at the top of the spa hierarchy the interviewer may ask you about your management style. The situational style is safe, because it means you will manage according to the situation, instead of one size fits all.

Also, if asked about what have you done with regards to personal development as the field is continuously changing, even if you don’t have something that is specific to the role you are applying for, don’t be afraid to list hobbies or other non-work-related activities here. Again, this shows your employer you are the go-getter they are looking for.

In the end, you want to ensure that you are leaving your interviewer with the impression that you are motivated, self – sufficient, and manage your time effectively.
